Sponsoring a Child with Plan Canada

Dates: June 2006 to present

Description: Plan Canada (formerly Foster Parents Plan) is a non-profit organization that has individuals sponsor children. The money then goes to help the children's families and communities in order to make them self sufficient and to secure the child's future.

I have been sponsoring a boy from Thailand since I first signed up. We have written to each other and have both sent pictures and artwork (He sent drawings, I sent letters my students in Victoria wrote to him).

Online: You can visit Plan Canada and sponsor a child today here .

Microlending With Kiva

Dates: January 2007 to present

Description: Kiva is a non-profit organization that connects lenders to those in need of a loan. Lenders can lend as little as $25 and all of that money gets lent to someone in a developing country. Microfinancing helps people get loans when they would not normally get money to start or improve their small businesses.

Generally all money lended is eventually paid back (with no interest) and can be reloaned as many times as you like. I have so far supported 29 businesses in the following countries: Azerbaijan, Bolivia, Cambodia, The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Guatemala, Honduras, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestine, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda and Viet Nam.

Support: Email Michael Without Borders for an invitation to join Kiva (or sign up here).

Teaching English in Korea

Dates: February 2008 to August 2009

Description: I teach at Alphabet Street Children's English School, in Seoul. In the mornings I teach kindergarten students (between the ages of 3 and 6). In the afternoon and early evening I teach elementary aged students. This is a paying job, though it has allowed me to gain valuable experience and has helped me learn how to speak simply in a new language (Korean).

Online: You can check out my school's website here .
